thanks to all who attended the 6th one surf fly event in huntington beach, california, and thanks for helping us to support the healing waters chapter of long beach. if it wasn’t for the service of our fine veterans we wouldn’t be enjoying days like this on the beach, we are forever grateful. we raised $2370 in our great raffle for healing waters which many of our sponsors generously supported! i will be posting lots of great pics and the osf recap soon, there were lots of nice fish caught this year, so please come back and visit…

osf5 dockweiler state beach recap!

April 23, 2012

One Surf Fly 5 – Dockweiler LineUp courtesy of Kristina Kaufman and Jorge Salas!

well the overcast morning and price of gas didn’t seem to discourage a nice turnout for our fifth one surf fly, held on dockweiler state beach in the shadows of los angeles airport. i will be adding more pics and stats to this report once i get the totals in for the fish counts. shane ran off and went fishing with the score cards, LOL! in the mean time i do have the winners noted and will be adding a photo gallery very soon. We would like to thank the fisherman’s spot for being the host fly shop and throwing in a fifty dollar gift card to our fantastic raffle. this years raffle earned $2800 for a wonderful cause. we all supported casting for recovery which helps breast cancer victims through fly fishing. marguerite duncan-abrams from the local los angeles chapter gave a brief presentation about the organization and was present to receive the donation. I want to personally thank all our sponsors: Abel, Buffs, Ross, Orvis, Redington, Fish Skull, Nightwatch Coffee and Olson Visual for making the yearly pledge and supporting us so we can all do great things for the industry and non-profits we support! I would also like to thank all the spotters and volunteers, who take a back seat to help keep the beach safe and record all the catches. a special thanks to everyone who donated to our awesome raffle, we couldn’t have raised the money and support without you and I am sure casting for recovery is very grateful for your kind generosity. we are all very lucky to have a great fraternity of saltwater fly anglers willing to assemble together for one day each year to celebrate our passion and in turn help some of us who need a helping hand. let’s keep this thing rocking, it can only get better! take a kid fishing, they are our future…
cheers…more pics to come!

osf5 checklist…please read!!!

April 18, 2012

here’s a little check list for those who have never attended the One Surf Fly.
this is really not a competition, it is a feel good, fun morning to make new friends, meet old ones, get a little fishing in and hopefully learn how to fish a fly you may never fished. winning a trophy for first fish, biggest fish and most fish is really just a bonus. plus winning fly in each category will get year subscription to northwest or southwest fly fisherman magazine.( you must be at the fisherman’s spot to receive trophies and subscriptions)

parking for the OSF5 will be in the north end of the second lot.

parking: dockweiler state beach parking lot opens at 6am, do not park up on the hill before 6am or you might get towed. check the map on exactly where we will be setting up. if you click on the map it will enlarge! weekend parking fee is $7 last I checked. PLEASE BRING EXACT SINGLES TO SPEED THINGS UP!

what to bring: valid CA fishing license, hat, sunglasses or safety glasses, fly rod & reel, waders, stripping basket, and a smile.

beach check in: we will have a table set up in the parking lot, look for the OSF banner. you need to bring ONE surf fly (sizes #6 to #2). We will have waivers and score cards on site or you can get your waiver at the Fisherman’s Spot prior to the morning’s event. once everyone is signed in, we would like to get a group photo before we begin. We will all walk down, spotters and anglers and spread out, when we are at the water’s edge, we will blow a whistle or wave a flag to begin the event. We should begin around 7:15 and go till 9:15am.

osf spotters: geno centofani, mike centofani, alex cady, john whitaker, dave wratchford, jim solomon, ken lindsay, rick olson, bill matthews, gary bulla, steve piper, jeff priest, randy norris, tim postel, bryan ida, darrel h. your fish is only valid if recorded and measured by a spotter! lose your fly and you are out.

after event:  turn in your scorecards to a spotter, all spotters will return the cards for us to tally the winners. we will then all drive to The fisherman’s spot (van nuys) for the award ceremony, casting for recovery presentation and raffle from 10am to 1pm. you must be present to win any items in the raffle. tickets will $5 each or five for $20. the raffle will begin around noon. we will also like to dedicate this year’s osf to zack solomon, who just passed away. we will have a large poster of zack which I would love for everyone to sign for his dad, jim solomon (osf member) Have fun and be safe out there!

quality over quantity, anytime.

a nice dinner plate size barred surf perch. photo by Al Q.

Met a good fishing buddy and OSF team member, Jeff Priest down at the beach this past Saturday in the early am. I was armed with my Nikon D300, he was armed with a fly rod.
It wasn’t long before his rod started to bounce up and down signaling the first perch of the morning. Turned out to be a fine specimen, around 14 to 15 inches and thick. I left shortly after but I am sure Jeff gave those fish a good run. Dust off those fly rods and get out there, the OSF5 Dockweiler is right around the corner.

Thank you to everyone who came today to fish and spot.  We all enjoyed the gift of fishing and camaraderie.  Over 50 anglers participated.  And through our raffle we gave the Matilija Dam project $1,600 towards their worthy cause.  There were many smiling faces as the raffle winners were announced.  This would not have been possible without the hard work of Shane Chung, Eric Rangel, Gary Bulla and the OSF Team and Bill Matthews.  Special thanks to our sponsors Abel Reels & Buffs, Kristina Kaufman for taking on the duties of official OSF photographer and Rick Olson from Olson Visual for making us a killer banner!
