from steelhead to corbina

July 16, 2012

Teresa’s first corbina on the fly! Congratulations!

Teresa K guides for steelhead up in Oregon and decided to come down to Los Angeles to visit her mom and get in a few early am sessions on the beach. Her mission was to land her first corbina on the fly.
I gave her the skinny on what to do and where to go. She fished two mornings, got her first bean the first morning, then hooked a few more the second morning only to have them break her off in the loose kelp which has plagued the shoreline due to afternoon winds. One of those fish was a lot bigger than the one she landed. She was using a Del Brown tan merkin. Way to go Teresa, that’s quite an accomplishment on your first two tries…now you have corbina fever

yeah baby! 2012 © photo by Al Quattrocchi

my skinny water setup: 6 wt sage one with sage 4280 reel loaded with a rio outbound short intermediate line armed with a grey merkin for the minus low am showdown. this is the setup I fished the past few days for the first time. i managed to land three beans on it so far, and it performed well. I will switch out to a sinking line when the fish start cruising the deeper troughs. -Al Q

osf5 checklist…please read!!!

April 18, 2012

here’s a little check list for those who have never attended the One Surf Fly.
this is really not a competition, it is a feel good, fun morning to make new friends, meet old ones, get a little fishing in and hopefully learn how to fish a fly you may never fished. winning a trophy for first fish, biggest fish and most fish is really just a bonus. plus winning fly in each category will get year subscription to northwest or southwest fly fisherman magazine.( you must be at the fisherman’s spot to receive trophies and subscriptions)

parking for the OSF5 will be in the north end of the second lot.

parking: dockweiler state beach parking lot opens at 6am, do not park up on the hill before 6am or you might get towed. check the map on exactly where we will be setting up. if you click on the map it will enlarge! weekend parking fee is $7 last I checked. PLEASE BRING EXACT SINGLES TO SPEED THINGS UP!

what to bring: valid CA fishing license, hat, sunglasses or safety glasses, fly rod & reel, waders, stripping basket, and a smile.

beach check in: we will have a table set up in the parking lot, look for the OSF banner. you need to bring ONE surf fly (sizes #6 to #2). We will have waivers and score cards on site or you can get your waiver at the Fisherman’s Spot prior to the morning’s event. once everyone is signed in, we would like to get a group photo before we begin. We will all walk down, spotters and anglers and spread out, when we are at the water’s edge, we will blow a whistle or wave a flag to begin the event. We should begin around 7:15 and go till 9:15am.

osf spotters: geno centofani, mike centofani, alex cady, john whitaker, dave wratchford, jim solomon, ken lindsay, rick olson, bill matthews, gary bulla, steve piper, jeff priest, randy norris, tim postel, bryan ida, darrel h. your fish is only valid if recorded and measured by a spotter! lose your fly and you are out.

after event:  turn in your scorecards to a spotter, all spotters will return the cards for us to tally the winners. we will then all drive to The fisherman’s spot (van nuys) for the award ceremony, casting for recovery presentation and raffle from 10am to 1pm. you must be present to win any items in the raffle. tickets will $5 each or five for $20. the raffle will begin around noon. we will also like to dedicate this year’s osf to zack solomon, who just passed away. we will have a large poster of zack which I would love for everyone to sign for his dad, jim solomon (osf member) Have fun and be safe out there!

gone but not forgotten…

April 1, 2012

Zack Solomon just passed away a few hours ago at the tender age of twenty seven from cancer. His dad, Jim Solomon, is a good friend, fishing companion and OSF team member. My prayers and love go out the Solomon family in this extremely difficult time. I am so happy I took this picture last August cause this is the way I will always remember Zack with his wetsuit, fly rod in hand and a great big smile. we will miss ya Zack!
PLEASE NOTE CHANGE: Services will be on Monday, April 9th at First United Methodist. Church, 1008 11th Street, Santa Monica, California at 7:00pm. There will be a paddle out memorial off Manhattan Beach pier this Saturday at 10am.
